uPVC, composite or aluminium, which type of door is right for me?

uPVC is lightweight, cost-effective and easy to look after, with good insulation and security for the price. The right answer for many back doors and a lot of front doors. Composite has a solid timber or insulating-foam core wrapped in GRP, which gives it noticeably better thermal performance, security and a wood-like appearance, at a higher price point. The standard choice for a statement front door these days. Aluminium is best for very slim sightlines and a contemporary look, most often used for bifold and patio sets. We'll talk you through which fits your home and budget when we survey.

How secure are new doors against forced entry?

Modern doors are built around multi-point locking systems, anti-snap cylinders and reinforced hinges as standard. Composite doors with a solid core resist forced entry far better than older uPVC or wooden doors. We only fit doors that meet rigorous industry standards for security testing, and just as importantly, every install is sealed and shimmed properly so the door performs as designed. A premium door fitted badly will fail before a standard door fitted well.

How long does a new door last?

A well-fitted uPVC door will give you 30 to 35 years with very little upkeep. Composite doors are built to last 30 years or more without warping, cracking or rotting, and the GRP outer skin shrugs off the Scottish weather. The lifespan depends much more on installation quality than the door itself: shimmed, flashed and sealed properly at the survey stage, your door performs for the long haul. Done badly, it will draught and stick within a few years no matter how much you spent on it.

Are new doors energy efficient?

Yes. Modern composite and uPVC doors have insulated cores and weather-tight seals that stop draughts at the threshold and prevent heat loss. You'll feel the difference in the hallway straight away, and over the year it adds up on the heating bill, especially if your old door was hollow, warped, or had perished seals. Composite cores tend to outperform standard uPVC for thermal efficiency, but a properly fitted uPVC door is still a big upgrade from a tired old one.

How much do new doors cost?

It depends on style, material, glazing and hardware. uPVC sits at the most affordable end, composite sits above that for the better core and finish, and aluminium bifold or patio sets cost more again for the slim profiles and engineering. We'll give you a fixed, itemised quote after the survey covering the door, fitting, hardware, glazing and any rot allowance. No surprise extras on the day, no 'today-only' discounts. Ring Jamie if you'd like a ballpark before booking a survey.

Do new doors need much maintenance?

Very little. A wipe down with warm soapy water every few months is all most doors need, no painting, sanding or sealing required. Composite doors have a weather-resistant outer skin that doesn't fade, peel or warp in the Scottish climate, and uPVC is just as forgiving. Hinges and locks benefit from a dab of lubricant once or twice a year and that's about it. None of the every-summer ritual you get with a timber door.

Can I customise the colour, glass and hardware?

Yes. We offer a free design consultation that walks you through colour options (from classic woodgrain effects to bold contemporary shades), glazing styles (frosted, decorative or clear), and hardware choices (handles, letterplates, knockers and the rest). Our designers can preview how the door will look on your home before you finalise, so you're not guessing. The bigger brands we fit (Rockdoor, Hurst, Solidor) all offer huge style ranges, so it's rarely a question of compromise.

How long does it take to install a new door?

Most door installs are completed within a few hours per door, often a single day for a full set of front, back and patio. Our team protects the surrounding area before they start, fits the new door properly with shims and seals, tests the lock and the swing, and tidies up before they leave. The same crew that measured the door fits it. No sub-contracting roulette, no different faces turning up on the day.

Built to last. Installed by people who care.
